- World's largest inland sea, divided between
- Iran and the USSR. Area about 400,000 sq
- km/155,000 sq mi, with a maximum depth of
- 1,000 m/3,250 ft. The chief ports are
- Astrakhan and Baku. It is now approximately
- 28 m/90 ft below sea level due to drainage in
- the N, and the damming of the Volga and Ural
- rivers for hydroelectric power. An underwater
- ridge divides it into two halves, of which
- the shallow N is almost salt-free. There are
- no tides. The damming has led to shrinkage
- over the last 50 years, and the growth of
- industry along its shores has caused
- pollution and damaged the Russian and Iranian
- caviar industries.
