  2. Iran and the USSR. Area about 400,000 sq
  3. km/155,000 sq mi, with a maximum depth of
  4. 1,000 m/3,250 ft. The chief ports are
  5. Astrakhan and Baku. It is now approximately
  6. 28 m/90 ft below sea level due to drainage in
  7. the N, and the damming of the Volga and Ural
  8. rivers for hydroelectric power. An underwater
  9. ridge divides it into two halves, of which
  10. the shallow N is almost salt-free. There are
  11. no tides. The damming has led to shrinkage
  12. over the last 50 years, and the growth of
  13. industry along its shores has caused
  14. pollution and damaged the Russian and Iranian
  15. caviar industries.
